Quven does, and it won’t make you file a concert under Music or a docuseries under TV Shows. Quven is a self-hosted media server by Quven Technologies S.R.L., free for personal use, and it offers Documentaries and Performances as library types of their own, each with the badges and shelves that suit it, on every plan.
Which servers give these titles a library of their own?
On 17 October 2026 we read the pages where Plex and Jellyfin describe their libraries. Plex’s guide to creating libraries, last modified on 13 April 2025, offers Movies, TV Shows, Music, Photos and Other Videos, and its guide to artist videos files a concert under an artist in a music library, as a video whose name ends in -concert. Jellyfin’s libraries page gives its three most common types the best support in its apps and discourages its mixed type “due to unreliable metadata results”. So where would a stand-up special go on Plex? Into one of those five types, beside everything else. Quven keeps them apart.
| Quven | Plex | Jellyfin | |
|---|---|---|---|
| A type for documentaries | Documentaries | Not one of its five types | Not among the types its page names |
| A type for concerts and stand-up | Performances | An artist video inside Music | Not among the types its page names |
| Films and series in one library | Told apart file by file | Movies and TV Shows are separate types | Mixed type discouraged for its metadata |
How does Quven tell a film from a series?
A Documentaries library holds both, and so does a Performances library, where a tour filed night by night can sit beside a concert film. The scan decides for each file:
Documentaries/
Free Solo (2018)/
Free Solo (2018).mkv
Our Planet (2019)/
Season 01/
Our Planet (2019) - S01E01.mkv
Performances/
Stop Making Sense (1984)/
Stop Making Sense (1984).mkv
Summer Tour (2024)/
Season 01/
Summer Tour (2024) - S01E01.mkv
- A file is an episode when its name carries a marker such as S01E01 or when it sits in a season folder under its series. A folder holding two or more episode numbers counts too.
- Anything else is a film, matched against the catalogues like any other.
- Every card wears its badge: Docufilm or Docuserie in Documentaries, Performance or Run in Performances.
What can you browse besides the titles?
In the desktop app and the web client, the shelves go further:
- Documentaries adds Actors and Directors to Titles, with Collections last, so you can follow one filmmaker through every film you keep.
- Performances puts Performers between Titles and Collections. A performer’s card counts their recordings, a press shows those alone, and typing the name in the search finds them too.
What if no catalogue knows the recording?
A festival set you filmed yourself won’t be on TMDb. That’s no obstacle. Open it and choose Edit metadata:
- Recorded on takes the day of the performance, which may fall years before the release.
- Venue names the place.
- Performers lists who was on stage, separated by commas, and replaces the billed cast on the Performers shelf.
The title’s page then says when and where it was recorded, and who played. If a catalogue does hold it under another spelling, Match with AI can look it up from the folder and file names, and managed AI matching comes with Pro.
How do you set one up?
- Choose Add library in the sidebar of the desktop app or the web client.
- Under Library type, pick Documentaries or Performances, then name the library.
- Press Add folder…, choose the folder and finish with Add and start scan.
Nothing gets renamed. Quven reads the folders where your files already sit, and the organisation guide shows the shapes that match best.
Where do they play?
They play in the desktop app for Windows and macOS, in the native apps for iPhone and iPad and in the one Android app that covers phones and tablets as well as Android TV and Fire TV, while the server also runs on Linux or on a NAS in Docker. The web client at app.quven.tv comes with Pro, while apps for Samsung and LG televisions and for Apple TV are on the way.
The original file plays first. When a screen can’t take it, hardware transcoding does the work on every plan, whereas Plex’s page on hardware-accelerated streaming, last modified on 11 September 2025, calls it a premium feature that requires an active Plex Pass. Watch history and playlists can follow you from Plex or Jellyfin, as the article on leaving Plex shows.
Why choose Lifetime now?
A concert film you love is one you’ll still watch in twenty years, and the server that holds it should last as long. Lifetime is every Max capability for one payment, including the ones Max gains later, and its price rises at each step of the published schedule. If you’d rather renew, the annual plan costs less than twelve months. The plans page sets out what each one adds, and you can download Quven today.
Frequently asked questions
Do Documentaries and Performances libraries cost anything?
No. Both library types come with every plan, along with their shelves and Edit metadata. Only managed AI matching needs Pro.
Can one Performances library hold stand-up and opera?
Yes. It’s meant for all of it, from an opera to a comedy special, filmed whole or as one recording per night.
