Quven on r/selfhosted: Docker and Unraid

Quven, the self-hosted media server free for personal use, is on r/selfhosted: how it runs on Docker, Unraid and Linux, and what stays free.

A small dark server connected by a cable, sitting next to a laptop on a desk

Quven is a self-hosted media server by Quven Technologies S.R.L., free for personal use, and on 30 September 2026 it went up on r/selfhosted. That community runs its own servers and asks hard questions about setup and licences, so the thread is a fair test of the product, and it’s where we can read what people would want changed first.

How it runs on your own server

The server ships as a signed Docker image for AMD64 and ARM64, a Compose bundle pulls it, and there’s an Unraid template with its own support thread, while if you’d rather skip containers the same server is a package for Linux on x64 and ARM64, or a bundle for Windows and macOS that installs the desktop app beside it. The Docker guide walks through the volumes and the first scan, and the article on the server in Docker explains how the image is built and signed.

What the library holds

Films and series sit beside documentaries and recorded performances. Music has a library kind of its own, and so do ebooks and comics, although both packs are still in preview and open only in the desktop app and the web client. A file plays exactly as it is whenever the client can read it, and when it can’t, hardware transcoding takes over on the acceleration your machine has. A Blu-ray or DVD subtitle drawn as a picture is drawn by the native apps, so the video doesn’t have to be re-encoded just to show it, and with Max it can become text.

What stays free

Hardware transcoding, remote access you configure yourself, the native apps and base subtitles cost nothing and carry no advertising. But the managed relay and the web client at app.quven.tv belong to Pro. Quven is closed source, and some readers of that subreddit will weigh that before they install anything. It doesn’t have to be a guess, because the plans page states the free floor and what each plan adds.

Where the apps are

The apps are native. There’s a desktop app for Windows and macOS and an iPhone and iPad app on the App Store. One Android app on Google Play covers phones and tablets as well as Android TV, and Fire TV has it on the Amazon Appstore. Apple TV and the smart televisions from Samsung and LG, and from Hisense, aren’t in a store yet, and the roadmap will keep listing them as coming until they are.

What we’d like to hear

Which step of a first install cost you the most time? And what would you need to see before you’d try Quven on your own server? The thread is where those answers help the next reader, and we read every one.

Lifetime is every Max capability for one payment, and its price rises at each step of the published schedule, while an annual plan costs less than twelve months paid one at a time. The offer below draws today’s figures.

Frequently asked questions

Is Quven open source?

No. Quven is closed source and free for personal use. The free floor never moves behind a paywall: playing your own library, hardware transcoding, the native apps, base subtitles and remote access you set up yourself. Pro adds the managed relay, the web client and a subtitle written from the audio on your own server, and Max adds translation, the subtitle editor and the repair of damaged files.

How do I run it in Docker or on Unraid?

Pull the signed image for AMD64 or ARM64 with the Compose bundle described in the Docker guide, or use the Unraid template listed in Community Applications, whose support thread is linked above. Scanning is always your call. Quven reads a folder only after you add it as a library.

Which devices does it play on?

Windows and macOS desktops, the iPhone and iPad, and Android phones and tablets, with Android TV and Fire TV beside them. With Pro, any browser works through the web client. Apple TV and the smart televisions from Samsung and LG, and from Hisense, are still to come, and the roadmap will list them until they arrive.
